Sharanabasaveshwar College of Arts, Kalaburagi was started under the aegis of Sharanabasaveshwar Vidhya Vardhak Sangha. Sharanabasaveshwar Vidhya Vardhak Sangha was established by Late Poojya Doddappa Appa in 1903. During those days this region was under the reign of the then Nizam state of Hyderabad. Urdu and Persian languages predominated in public life and administration. Kannada was mother tongue of majority of common people which was grossly neglected by the rulers.

People of the region suffered from the multiple slaveries of British overlords and tyranny of Nizams. Under such crucial circumstances, Doddappa Appa rose to the occasion and started Public library in 1918 in order to create awareness among common masses.

The next bold step taken by him was to start Mahadevi Kanya School in 1934 which was exclusively meant for girls that too in Kannada medium which was the mother tongue of commoners.

Our college was started by Sharanabasaveshwar Vidhya Vardhak Sangha in 1956. It was the first and foremost private college of Arts in those days in this region. Being the oldest reputed educational institution, it has contributed greatly in nation building.

The college is permanently affiliated to Gulbarga University, Kalaburagi recognized under 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act. The institution is recognized as an institution of quality standards with ISO:9001-2015 Certificate no. QMS/018739/1020.

The institution is providing educational facilities at affordable cost to the students of socially and economically weaker sections of the society.
